Fiber optic systems play an important role in modern telecommunications. Fiber optic systems use light as the media for communication, because light is a carrier with highest information carrying capability. There are many other advantages of using fiber optic systems, for example, main raw materials of fiber optics is SIO2 which is very easy to get anywhere on the earth.
Here we would introduce the basic model of the fiber optic system. Nowadays most of the telecommunication network is still not a full-fiber network but it combines the fiber optic network and the copper network, usually the fiber optic part is used as backbones, and the copper part is used at the user end. During its work, the fiber optic systems need to transform the signal from electric to optical at the transmitter side, the optical signal will go through the optical fiber for a certain distance, at the receiver end, and the optical signal is transformed back to electric form by a receiver. This is the basic model of fiber optic communication system; here we can see the whole systems use the optical fiber as the media for communication.
The industry is constantly abuzz with talk of fiber optic system like FTTH (fiber to the home) and even FTTD( fiber to the desk), largely because the technology do exists, but the cost to replace the vast quantity copper systems to a all fiber optic system is really big and it do require time. We believe FTTH and FTTD will be realized someday in the future, but exactly when is still uncertain.
