MTP cables have become increasingly popular in data centers due to their ability to manage high-density cabling for 40G/100G/400G connections. However, the base-12 MTP system presents a challenge in terms of fiber wastage. To address this issue, MTP conversion cables have been developed, converting the base-12 MTP backbone to the more cost-effective base-8 system.
MTP conversion cables, also known as conversion harness cables, share the fanout form of MTP breakout cables but differ in fiber counts and types. Terminated with only MTP connectors on both ends, they are ideal for high-density cabling. These cables facilitate 10G-40G, 40G-40G, 40G-100G, and 40G-120G direct connections, minimizing fiber wastage and enhancing the capacity and flexibility of existing base-12 and base-24 MTP cabling systems.
Three types of MTP conversion cables cater to different networking environments. The 1×2 MTP conversion cable features a 24-fiber MTP connector on one end and two 12-fiber MTP connectors on the other, integrating a base-24 MTP cable into the existing base-12 backbone MTP links. Data transmission is evenly split across two 12-fiber strands previously installed within the MTP system.
The 1x3 MTP conversion cable has a 24-fiber MTP connector on one end and three 8-fiber MTP connectors on the other, converting a base-24 backbone link into three base-8 cables for 40G to 120G deployment. This cable creates three 40G interfaces for QSFP+ modules, utilizing all 24 fibers effectively.
The 2x3 MTP conversion cable features two 12-fiber MTP connectors on one end and three 8-fiber MTP connectors on the other, enabling signal conversion from three four-channel modules to two 12-fiber trunks, maximizing the utilization of the 12-fiber system.
MTP conversion cables provide a flexible high-density cabling system, significantly enhancing the capacity of existing 12-fiber and 24-fiber MTP networks. They offer a cost-effective solution for 40G/100G/120G connections, allowing users to choose suitable cables based on current demands and future network migration plans. MTP cables and MTP conversion cables present a practical solution for high-density cabling in data centers, reducing fiber wastage, boosting network capacity, and offering greater flexibility.
