The QSFP-100G-CWDM4-S Compatible QSFP28 Optical Transceiver Module from Cisco is crafted for utilization in 100GBASE Ethernet, offering seamless throughput up to 2km over single-mode fiber (SMF). The 100 Gigabit Ethernet signal is transmitted across four distinct wavelengths at 1271nm, 1291nm, 1311nm, and 1331nm. This transceiver aligns with the standards set by IEEE 802.3ba, IEEE 802.3bm, 100G CWDM4 MSA, SFF-8665, SFF-8636, and ITU-T G.694.2. With its comprehensive features, it finds suitability in various applications, including data centers, high-performance computing networks, enterprise core, and distribution layer setups.

The 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module is a full-duplex, hot-swappable, and photonic integrated optical module, fully compliant with QSFP MSA, CWDM4 MSA, and IEEE P802.3bm standards. This type of 100G optical module is equipped with LC duplex connectors, compatible with LC single-mode fiber jumpers, and has a maximum transmission distance of 2 kilometers. Additionally, the 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module employs Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology, enabling the reuse of four wavelengths on a single fiber, significantly conserving fiber resources.

While the 100G QSFP28 LR4 optical module can transmit up to 10 kilometers, covering the transmission range of the 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module, the choice between them depends on factors such as power consumption and laser costs. The 100G QSFP28 LR4 optical module has higher power consumption and laser costs compared to the 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module. Therefore, within a 2-kilometer transmission range, opting for the 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module is more economically advantageous.

At the transmitter end, the 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module first converts four 25Gbps electrical signals into four CWDM optical signals and then multiplexes them onto a single fiber for 100Gbps transmission. At the receiver end, the 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module demultiplexes the incoming optical signal into four channels of CWDM optical signals, which are then converted into four electrical output signals.

The 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module is commonly used for 100G interconnection in data centers and enterprise networks with transmission distances not exceeding 2 kilometers. The wiring is straightforward, requiring the insertion of two 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 optical modules into the corresponding ports of two 100G switches. Additionally, LC duplex fiber jumpers are used in conjunction with fiber adapter panels or fiber distribution boxes to achieve 100G interconnection. These fiber adapter panels or distribution boxes can be installed on fiber distribution racks, making this wiring method suitable for structured cabling systems.
